The Event Education and Planning Committee are busy at work developing a schedule of events for the upcoming season!
The member events will kick off again this year with our Member Welcome Event, to be held at Architecture Sarasota from 5:00 until 7:30 p.m. More details will follow in the invitation you will receive in your email closer to the date.
The Committee will also be planning several walking tours during season. Locations in the City as well as Venice are being considered. Along with the walking tours, we hope to be able to schedule several educational lectures that we think will be of interest to our membership.
Our Board continues its advocacy work for our threatened historic structures by lobbying the Commissioners and other local officials, and getting press attention to the threat posed by developers and builders. The EEP Committee started to assist the Board in their efforts by initiating rallies at City Hall when Commissioners are meeting and deciding on critical votes regarding demolition. The first rally was for the McAlpin House.
As we stood there outside City Hall, the “red T shirt brigade” arrived. This group of activists attend all the Sarasota City Commissioner meetings to voice their objections to the high-rise condo project being considered on Palm Avenue. They encouraged to follow their example and brand our movement with T Shirts.
We are pleased to say that we have followed their advice. At our following rally, which was for the Colson Hotel on September 3, the SAHP rally attendees sported their new logo T shirts and stood together in solidarity. We hope this rally movement will continue in this coming year and that our membership will joins us in meeting our elected officials as they come to work on meeting days.
If you are interested in purchasing a SAHP T shirt, they can be purchased for $25 and are available in Small, Medium, Large, X Large, and XXL sizes. Please call or send an email with your request. Proceeds from these T shirts help fund our advocacy work as well as helping in a small way in the support of our loan and easement programs.
Finally, plans are underway for our Annual Meeting in March and the Heritage Awards Dinner which will be held on Saturday, May 3. Details will follow in the upcoming months.
If you are interested in serving on the Committee or would like to help in any of the upcoming events, please reach out to Kathy Perlman, the committee chairperson, at perlmankathleen@gmail.com or call her at 941 504-1336.
